SCIENTISTS
ANTON VAN LEEUWENHOEK (1632-1723)
- Father of Microbiology, Father of Bacteriology, Father of Protozoology
- First person to see bacteria and protozoas
- Creator of single lens microscope or simple microscope
- Observed a variety of tiny living creatures which he called "Animalcules"
- Cast doubt on the theory of spontaneous generation (Life can arise spontaneously from non-living materials) which is also called "abiogenesis"
Louis pasteur (1822-1895)
- Dealt a fatal blow to the Theory of Spontaneous Generation
- He discovered forms of life that could exist in the absence of oxygen
- He introduces the terms "Aerobes" (organisms that require oxygen) and "Anaerobes" (organisms that doesn't require oxygen to live)
- Discovered that microorganisms cause fermentation and disease
- Originated the process of pasteurization which is used to kill pathogens in many kinds of liquids
- Developed vaccines against anthrax and rabies.
Robert koch (1843-1910)
- Discoverd the bacterium Micobacterium tuberculosis that causes Tuberculosis and the bacterium Vibrio Cholarae that causes Cholera
- Koch's postulates are four criteria designed in the 1880's to establish a causal relationship between a causative microbe and a disease.
KOCH'S POSTULATES
- Postulate 1: The microorganism must be found in abundance in all organisms suffering from the disease, but should not be found in healthy organisms.
- Postulate 2: The microorganism must be isolated from a diseased organism and grown in pure culture.
- Postulate 3: The cultured microorganism should cause disease when introduced into a healthy organism.
- Postulate 4: The microorganism must be reisolated from the inoculated, diseased experimental host and identified as being identical to the original specific causative agent.
